Every family has its own unique set of traditions during the holidays—whether it's gift swapping, baking together or getting out in the snow. What better time than now to start your own traditions as a couple, that you can continue on into married life. Here are 10 fun home holiday traditions to try.
1. Bake treats. The holidays are synonymous with sweets and there's nothing better than having a variety of treats to offer when guests stop by. Make an afternoon of it, baking goodies you love and trying a few new recipes—who knows you might find a new favourite.
2. Throw a party. Entertaining as a couple is a great way to start integrating your friends and family, especially if they're not already well acquainted. Ensure your guest list is balanced between both sides and if you need to, separate the tasks between you and your mister, so one person isn't doing all of the work. Plus, it's a great way to see what else you need to add to your registry!
3. Roast a turkey. Push your cooking skills to the limit by planning a decadent dinner. If it's always your parents who do the holiday cooking, turn the tables and invite them over for a home-cooked meal. Now is the time to try favourite family recipes, as well as experimenting with new ones.
4. Have a movie marathon. When you're lucky enough to get an evening off from holiday schmoozing, hit up your local movie store (or DVD collection) for a night of holiday movie faves. Mix it up with classics like Home Alone and A Christmas Carol, and newbies like Four Christmases for a night of popcorn and laughs.
5. Decorate as a duo. Merge your creative talents and get into the holiday spirit by decorating your home. Even if you live separately, get into the festive vibe with smaller projects you can bring into your new nest together, like wreaths or Christmas ornaments.
6. Get Scent-imental. Ever wondered why the smell of something reminds you of a particular event or time in your life? It's because scent is closely related to memory. We like the idea of helping to develop strong memories by including pleasant aromas in your holiday traditions. Example? Try scented candles or body lotions just for the season so every time you use it you'll trigger those happy memories.
7. Wrap Together. Aside from spending time with your loved ones, gift giving can also be a gratifying part of your holiday traditions. Instead of hurriedly wrapping your gifts, make it an event, including hot chocolate and holiday tunes.
8. Send Greetings. You're en route to becoming a married couple, so why not start sending out a combined greeting card? Using your engagement photos is a cute way to personalize your message. Even just selecting cards together and sending them out to friends and family is a fun tradition to start, to solidify your upcoming union.
9. Exchange Gifts. One tradition you should start now is a gift exchange between you and your mister. Instead of just buying an item, establish rules to the exchange, such as the gift has to be under $50 or it has to be homemade. Personalizing the swap is what will make it a special tradition for you both for years to come.
10. Cosy Up. Don't forget to take some quality time together, whether it's sitting by the fire, dining á deux or just chilling out. Wedding planning and the holiday season can be draining, so be sure to spend time enjoying each other's company.
