Slim Fast
You can thank Mad Men’s Don Draper for the return of the sleek and sophisticated ’60’s style suit. This modern-day homage to such style icons as Sammy Davis Junior and the rest of the Rat Pack is a little bit mod, a little bit rock ’n’ roll—perfect for a hip and sophisticated nightclub wedding, says Jeff Farbstein, executive fashion director for Harry Rosen. Likewise, Toronto-based designer Philip Sparks (pictured), known for his nostalgic but modern aesthetic, showed slim suiting with nipped-in waists for an utterly au courant spring look. Indeed, menswear shapes have shifted so drastically in the past several years that suits can easily look dated if they don’t comply with today’s status quo: a slimmer silhouette and shorter proportions, Leonard Goldstein, President of Freeman Formalwear, notes.
Grey Scale
You can never go wrong with basic black, but there’s a definite trend towards lighter shades of grey from charcoal to dove. Indeed, one of the most exciting new styles on offer at Freeman Formalwear is a charcoal grey Kenneth Cole tuxedo, which Goldstein describes as “a real alternative to black.” At Harry Rosen, suits in different grey tones are also front and centre, with an emphasis on pinstripe fabrications and lightweight materials. What’s Sparks’ preferred fabric for this season? It’s light grey window-pane check, of course. For a fresh, monochromatic look, Sparks paired his modern take on the suit with a matching shirt and tie.
Rainbow Bright
Sparks punctuated his neutral grey and white colour palette with pops of vibrant yellow, such as a tie in a sunny hue. Similarly, Goldstein predicts that brightly coloured accessories (ties, pocket squares, etc.) will be more popular than ever, and are a great way to add some pizzazz to a simple suit. He notes that jewel tones, such as purple, emerald, gold and red are especially prevalent. Rich vibrant shades are also on offer at Harry Rosen in addition to softer hues such as lilac and sky blue.
