Your honeymoon is a time to relax and enjoy each other’s company. You’ve been planning for so long that everything will go perfectly. . .right? Not necessarily, but we’ve created a list of five common honeymoon emergencies and how to deal. Just in case.
1. Getting sick: If you or your mister falls ill on your honeymoon remember to stay calm. Many travellers find that new foods and climates leave them feeling less than perfect. Drink lots of water throughout your trip to stay hydrated.
Plan ahead: If you’re heading to the Caribbean, talk to your doctor about getting a common travel immunization. Remember to pack a first aid kit and a medicine bag with Imodium, Pepto-Bismol, Tums and an effective painkiller. Check with your employer or insurance company to ensure your medical expenses will be covered in another country.
2. Forgetting your passport: Most popular travel destinations require you to have a valid passport. You should also bring supporting ID like a birth certificate. If you’ve forgotten yours at home, you’ll need to contact a close friend or family member to bring it to the airport.
Plan ahead: You should check the expiry date of your passports six months before your planned honeymoon. This will allow plenty of time for necessary renewals. Before you pack your passports and other ID (drivers’ licences and birth certificates) make photocopies and leave these with a trusted family member. It’s best to pack well ahead of the wedding; don’t trust your frazzled wedding brain to remember these important details two hours before you walk down the aisle.
3. Cancelled flight: If your flight is cancelled, you or your new mister should phone the company with whom you booked the trip. They should be able to suggest another flight to get you to your destination on time.
Plan ahead: Book your honeymoon through a travel agent or a company you trust. Paying for travel insurance is a great way to protect your travel investment so you won’t lose any money if the trip is cancelled.
4. Losing your money: Being in a foreign country without any cash is a situation you don’t want to be in. If your money is lost or stolen, you should be able to use your credit or debit cards to withdraw money at some ATMs.
Plan ahead: Consider buying traveller’s checks, as these can be replaced if they’re lost or stolen. Keep your cash in more than one spot. Stash some in your suitcase and some in your husband’s. That way if one bag goes missing, you’ll still have some cash. If you plan to use your credit card, it’s important to notify your bank that you’ll be abroad.
5. Getting lost: There’s nothing romantic about finding yourself lost on your honeymoon. If this happens, stick together. As much as men hate to ask for directions, this isn’t the time to go off on your own to seek help.
Plan ahead: Talk to your hubby before any day trips. Decide on a meeting place in case you get separated. It’s always helpful to learn a few key words in the local language. Some phrases you may want to practice are: left, right and where is the hotel?
