Countdown to Perfect Hair

Follow our checklist to guarantee luscious wedding day locks.

12 Months

  • Call your stylist. Set the wheels in motion for your wedding day style. The moment your groom proposes, call your stylist to announce the good news and get him or her on your speed-dial list. It’s time to start planning your wedding style.
  • Decide on length. If you have short hair, but want it long for the wedding, it’s time to get growing!
  • Not happy with your current hair colour? If you want to tinker with it, start experimenting now so you have plenty of time to find your perfect shade. Plan to refresh your roots every four to six weeks until the wedding day.
  • Keep your hair healthy. Invest in proper styling tools—it’s essential. Natural-bristle brushes for styling and a wide-tooth comb to use on wet hair are must-haves.
  • Examine your at-home hair care regime. Invest in a quality shampoo packed with nourishing vitamins and botanicals, and a daily conditioner that is tailored to your hair type (dry, oily, chemically treated, curly, etc.).

9 Months

  • Schedule regular appointments. Have your tresses trimmed every six weeks. This keeps ends healthy and your style in shape.
  • Skip the blow-dryer. If you’re addicted to blow-drying, give it a rest and let your locks air-dry at least once a week. Constant heat and styling takes a toll on hair, so give it a vacation every now and then.
  • Practice safe styling. When you do blow-dry, keep this pro tip in mind to help prevent split ends: apply a dab of conditioner to your tips to seal in moisture and prevent any breakage.
  • Create a “look book”. Start compiling photos from magazines of styles you might like for your wedding.

6 Months

  • Keep your hair squeaky clean. Wash your hair once a week with a clarifying shampoo, which helps remove excess product and any residue from your locks.
  • Get conditioning. Have your stylist recommend a deep-conditioning treatment for you to use at home once every two weeks. Products packed with protein usually work the best and infuse hair with added strength and vitality.
  • Seek expert advice. Start intensive consultations with your stylist about your hair options for your big day. Share your magazine clippings with him or her, and details about your dress and headpiece. From there, you can start brainstorming together about your look.
  • Book a trial appointment. Plan to bring along your tiara and veil so your stylist can create a perfect style.
  • Get out your camera! Bring a Polaroid camera and close friend to your style trial. Have your stylist try three different styles and ask your partner to snap a photo of each. Take them home to ponder which one you like best.

3 Months

  • Settle on a hairstyle. Have one last trial with your stylist to ensure that you are completely happy with the look you’ve chosen for your wedding.
  • Get special treatments. Every time you have a cut or colour, ask your stylist to throw in a special treatment for your hair. A special shine treatment or a deep-conditioning system will leave your hair (and scalp) feeling rejuvenated.
  • Book your wedding-day appointment. You can never book too early—you want to make sure you get a prime-time slot that day. Most salons will go the extra mile to pamper you on wedding day—bring on the champers!

1 Month

  • Keep up with your maintenance. Continue with your regular trim and colour touch-ups as W-day approaches.
  • Get glossed. If you have steered away from colour all these months but want to add extra shine to your hair, ask your stylist to apply a clear colour gloss. This treatment does not alter the colour of your hair, but infuses it with a glass-like sheen.

1 Week

  • Touch up your colour. Plan to do it three to four days before the big day so your hair looks picture perfect.
  • Confirm your wedding day hair appointment. While you’re at it, schedule a scalp massage as part of your package—this will leave you feeling relaxed and stress-free.
