Hair ’Dos

Get gorgeous hair for your wedding day by following this detailed beauty regime. By Sara Duck

You’ve got your dress, the photographer and the makeup figured out, but what about the hair? Wedding hair success is all about pre-planning and early trial-and-error with your stylist. Here are five things to factor in for a winning wedding hair regime.

1. For Your Consideration
Given that hair only grows about half an inch per month, any drastic changes to your current look aren’t recommended. However, you should start working on potential hairstyles for your big day. Before meeting with your hairstylist, decide on: your wedding dress design and neckline, any special jewellery, hairpiece or accessories, and wedding ceremony style.

2. Do Your Research
Find and collect a few tear sheets of possible hair options from the massive stack of wedding magazines you’ve accumulated. Don’t be afraid to tell your stylist which portions of each picture you like. While discussing potential styles, be confident your stylist is picking up on who you are. When looking at your wedding pictures in 10 years, you should recognize yourself!

3. Trial To Avoid Error
If you err on the cautious side and want to avoid any potential beauty disaster, book your trial in the same season as your wedding—your makeup and your hair react differently to humidity and the environment. Don’t forget to bring your chosen hairpiece or accessory. If your desired hairstyle needs to support a veil, consider a style complementary to wearing it during the ceremony and having it off during the party reception. You can expect your consultation to be a finished hairstyle complete with veil or hair accessory.

4. Ramping Up
Now is the time to be aware of the timing that surrounds your hair and skincare regimes. If you wash your hair every day, this is probably the best pattern to follow on your wedding day. You might be someone who likes day-two hair—if so, arrive on your day-of appointment with hair you washed the day before. Do you get the most compliments two weeks after your highlights? Then get your hair highlighted two weeks before your date, but get a haircut one week before, if that’s your optimal time.

5. Day-Of
Remember to wear a shirt or hoodie that doesn’t require you to pull it off over your head and upset any part of your bridal hair. Despite the innate bridal desire to multi-task, it is not advisable to have your makeup done while in your dress. The key to a calm and smooth wedding morning is relying on the talented professionals you have hired. Throughout the afternoon and evening, your makeup should not be noticed, even though your wedding day is full of photographic moments and face-to-face greetings. It should be seamless.

6. Showtime!
Remember these words of wisdom: your hair (and makeup) should always complement—and not overwhelm—you and your gown! Less is always more.
