The Groom’s Guys

How your fiancé should pick his main men and their assignment duties. By Stephanie Gray

You've already chosen your girls and know exactly how they'll be helping you out on the big day, but what about your mister's men? Once he knows the responsibilities of his party it will help him decide exactly who he wants at his side when he says "I do".

Making the Decision

• Choosing the best man is a totally personal decision for your guy. He needs to pick someone he knows will be supportive, trustworthy, organized, responsible and fun!
• Brother versus best friend for best man: who trumps? While some say family first, if his best friend has been there through thick and thin or he's closer to him than his sibling, or his brother lives far away, picking a best friend isn't a bad thing. He's going to need his support from start to finish.
• When it comes to choosing the groomsmen, it's best to have the same number as bridesmaids (but not an absolute). Since they'll be paired with your girls, have your man be considerate when selecting these mates, too. He needs guys he can count on, especially on the day. 

Best Man

• Plans the bachelor party.
• Makes sure the groom has everything he needs for the honeymoon.
• Picks up anything the groom has ordered.
• Is responsible for the marriage licence and its delivery to the officiant.
• Acts as a legal witness to the wedding.
• Decorates the getaway vehicle.
• Keeps the bride’s ring safe until the ceremony.
• Gets the groom and groomsmen to the wedding on time.
• Offers the first toast at the reception and can serve as the master of ceremonies.
• Holds the reins tight to prevent potential wedding mishaps, like a t00-drunk Uncle Bob near the microphone.

Groomsmen

• Help the best man with his pre/post-wedding responsibilities.
• Clean up the ceremony site before leaving for the reception.
• Dance with the bride, both mothers and every bridesmaid.

Tip:  Groomsmen often double as ushers by seating wedding guests and “releasing” them after the recessional by walking down the aisle. Providing directions to the reception and handing out programs are also common responsibilities.
