Green Party

On your wedding day, eat, drink and be fashionable…the eco-friendly way! By Nicole Keen

When the inaugural Eco Wedding and Lifestyle Show (ecoweddingshow.com) rolled into Toronto’s Design Exchange this past weekend, Weddingbells was more than happy to be on board as a media sponsor. We were also glad to see such a diverse group of vendors with so many fantastic ideas for throwing a green party: from what you eat and drink to what you wear down the aisle.

Green Eats
Give your guests something to sink their teeth into with sweet treats from ChocoSol (chocosoltraders.com). Using organically grown Mayan cacao beans from Mexico, this company produces chemical-free chocolates using bicycle technologies and volcanic stone grinders. ChocoSol is firmly committed to producing the most “green” chocolate products possible – and they taste great, too!

If you’re looking for the perfect planet-friendly parting gift, send your guests on their merry way with some adorable, hand-iced cookie favours from Sweet Impressions (sweetimpressions.ca). Their eco options include earth-friendly packaging and ribbon and organic ingredients. Vegan cookies are also part of the repertoire.

Green Drinks
Consider serving carbon-positive Plantatree Wine (plantatreewine.com) at your reception. Varietals include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and for each bottle purchased, Lifford Wine Agency in conjunction with Tree Canada will plant one tree. Just think of the positive impact an open bar could have on the planet!

After all that vino, you’re sure to need some perking up, which is where Merchants of Green Coffee (merchantsofgreencoffee.com) enters the picture. You and your guests can savour the taste of a fine Arabica blend knowing that it comes from a company that stands for “Fresh Coffee, Fair Trade and Green Business.” Bonus: their pre-packaged beans also make great attendant gifts.

Green Threads
When it comes to eco-conscious bridal fashions, there appear to be two major trends afoot: earth-friendly fabrics and reworked vintage. Using organic fabrics, such as hemp-silk blends and ramie, talented designers Wendy Traas (wendytraas.com), Margaret Macleod (margaretmacleod.com) and Evan Biddell (winner of Project Runway Canada) create exquisite wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses that are feminine, delicate and green, to boot! On the “something old” side of the coin, several designers showed off their reinterpreted vintage offerings. Standouts included an Asian-inspired floral silk wrap from Melanie’s Closet Vintage Couture (melaniescloset.com) and an ’80s thrift store find, that was given new life as a sexy lace mermaid dress with a convertible skirt in the hands of capable designer Iulia Isbasoiu of “As You Like It” Couture (416-962-4167).
