Green Hawaii (Part Two)

Concerned about your carbon footprint? Honeymoon on the island of Kauai, a natural wonderland where adventure abounds and respect for the land is a way of life. By Nicole Keen

Hang Ten
While in Kauai you must try surfing, the traditional sport of Hawaiian royalty. The experienced instructors at Hawaiian Surfing Adventures (hawaiiansurfingadventures.com), located in laid-back Hanalei Bay on the island’s North Shore, will have you riding the waves in no time!

Retail Detail
On the island of Kauai there are numerous historical buildings that have been re-purposed and given a whole new lease on life. One such site is the Wilcox Estate in Kilohana (kilohanakauai.com), a former sugar plantation, which now houses retail shops featuring locally produced, handcrafted merchandise including pottery and jewellery. This exquisite 1930’s mansion also offers fine dining at Gaylord’s.

Happy Trails
Hike to one of two lookouts at Waimea Canyon (nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”) with Kauai Eco Tours (kauaieco-tours.com) to take in some of the most awe-inspiring views on the island. At 3,600 feet deep and 10 miles long, this range of time-worn peaks and emerald-green valleys is truly a natural marvel to behold.

Giddy Up
Kauai has a long, proud history of cowboys or paniolo. As such, a horseback riding lesson is a must-do during your time on-island. At Esprit de Corps Riding Academy (kauaihorses.com) you’ll cover the basics of riding and experience trotting and cantering while soaking up the breathtaking surroundings. If you’re looking for an out-of-the-box wedding ceremony, you can even say “I do” on horseback!

Feathered Friends
Head to the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (fws.gov/kilaueapoint/) to enjoy incredible views of the Pacific and partake in some of the best birdwatching in Kauai. Established in 1985, the refuge is home to numerous seabirds, including red-footed boobies, black-footed albatrosses and great frigate birds (they have a wingspan of 7 feet!). Also, be sure to check out the historic lighthouse on-site. Built in 1913, this beacon guided ships to safety along the North Shore for 62 years.
