Nature Calls. The trend towards flora and fauna has been big for a few seasons and shows no signs of slowing down. Patterns featuring birds, trees and flowers (big and small!) continue to dominate the market and look fresh and fabulous in your home. For a soft, feminine design check out Portmeirion’s Up the Garden Path or Eden Flowers. If you want something bold, completely fabulous and totally over-the-top, Flower Fantasy, the newest pattern by Versace for Rosenthal, is definitely for you!

The Golden Touch. For years, the trend in tableware has been towards pieces decorated and detailed with touches of platinum. The end of an era is drawing near, though, with more and more patterns warming up and going for the gold. Ones to watch for: Waterford Golden Apple, Wedgwood Golden Bird and Monique Lhuillier for Royal Doulton Charms. All are exquisitely decorated patterns with a glorious golden finish making them extra-luxe.
Indian Inspiration. Patterns and colours with a distinct Indian flair will liven up your home and give your table an exotic flavour. Designer Michael Aram just launched a line of giftware and tableware with Waterford that’s a particular standout. Also new, noteworthy and on-trend is Villeroy & Boch’s Samarah, featuring ornate turquoise and red paisley designs on sleek, square-shaped plates.
Shape Shifters. Funk up your table with dinnerware and accent pieces in offbeat configurations. Think teardrop-shaped dipping bowls, elliptical plates, or unconventional water pitchers. Villeroy & Boch has introduced a very cool concept for the modern table with its new Urban Nature collection, which features cool “bridge” shaped serving dishes that literally connect diners across the table!
Fine Wines. Quality vintages are synonymous with entertaining and part and parcel of decanting in style is having great stemware on hand. Some of the best new ones to watch for: Bouquet by Vera Wang, a pretty, classic pattern that’s very Vera; Marquis by Waterford Crystal and Ripple by Mikasa have simple detailing and are ultra-sleek and modern; Monique Lhuillier has a line called Bamboo launching in early 2009 to match her dinnerware collection of the same name.
