Finding a gown you love on the bridal runways is a great idea, but consider turning your head to the glam goddesses on the red carpet, as it’s also a great place to get inspired. All you need to do is find the look you love, imagine it in white (unless it already is) and ta-da! You’ll be an A-list bride in no time.
At the 60th annual Primetime Emmy awards, fashion trends that were seen on the Spring 2009 bridal runways also showed up here. Take for example the huge bow on Eva Longoria’s Marchesa cocktail dress, which was seen at Oscar de la Renta and Priscilla of Boston on the bridal runways. Read on to find out what other trends Hollywood caught onto and how you can make them yours.
Lace
Romantic, feminine and pretty. It’s a fabric that makes perfect sense for a wedding gown. Plus, it’s arguably this season’s “it” material since Miuccia Prada used it throughout her Fall/Winter ’08 ready-to-wear collection. At the Emmy Awards, Sandra Oh (pictured) looked stunning in her black Oscar de la Renta, while Marcia Cross turned to a nude-toned Elie Saab for a more demure vibe.
One-Shoulder
If drama is what you want, follow stars like Christina Applegate and Mariska Hargitay who both wore one-shoulder gowns. It evokes elegance and is definitely a more fashion-forward cut. Vera Wang and Adele Wechsler both featured one-shoulder pieces in their bridal collections.
Sweetheart Neckline
It’s a classic shape for the classic girl. Debra Messing wowed with her black Monique Lhuillier, while Tina Fey carried her armful of trophies in a slim-fitting David Meister mermaid gown. Consider choosing this neckline if you’re looking to amplify your bust, then choose a skirt that suits your figure (for example, Debra did tulle and Tina went fitted).
Beading
A little glitz goes a long way, especially on white. You could pluck Olivia Wilde’s pale silver satin and chiffon Reem Acra as is for your W-day. With beaded cap sleeves and soft ruching, it was possibly the prettiest gown of the evening. Felicity Huffman also had studs sprinkled on her tulle Reem Acra, while Cheryl Hines went white with rhinestones around the neckline.
Ruffles
This feminine embellishment has predominated on both the red carpet and the runways for the past season and will continue to be popular into the bridal sphere for Spring 2009. Brooke Shields popped in her fuchsia Badgley Mischka, while Teri Hatcher shone in a canary Monique Lhuillier with a ruffle down the middle of her gown. Designers like Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera all included pretty ruffles in their bridal collections.
