In the past several years, organic has become quite the buzzword, but what does it actually mean? When it comes to food, organic means that fruits and vegetables, for example, were produced without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers. For meat and poultry, organic indicates that the animals were raised without antibiotics and growth hormones. Obviously, less chemicals and artificial substances make organic foods better for you, but they are better for the planet, too. For starters, fewer toxins are released into the air, water and soil with organic farming practices. Furthermore, all-natural farming methods are more favourable to existing ecosystems. Lastly, organic farmers are more likely to employ energy-saving technologies and utilize recyclable or biodegradable packaging. Besides shopping the organic aisle of your neighbourhood supermarket, there are other ways that you can help the environment by being a savvy consumer. Try to shop for seasonal produce when possible in order to support local farms. Last but not least, BYOB—Bring Your Own Bag to the grocery store! Anya Hindmarch started the craze with her “I’m not a plastic bag” tote, and the market is now awash with stylish, reusable options.
