Get a Perfect Pedicure

Five tips for flawless feet. By Lydia Parafianowicz

If you’re planning to wear a pair of sexy peep-toe stilettos, or an ultra-glam gold sandal on your wedding day, perfectly pedicured toes are a must. Make sure you put your best foot forward on wedding day with these four pedicure tips.

1. Going to a Pedicure Pro
Pedicures are seriously one of the most indulgent of spa therapies, and when you’ve had one, you will never go back to tending to your tootsies at home. If shopping for a spa for your pedicure service, be sure to choose a reputable and safe establishment. What does this mean? Be certain that the premises are clean, and ask if they sterilize the implements they use and the footbaths you soak in. “There are a lot of sanitation issues with pedicure thrones and footbaths,” cautions Jennifer Eisen of Toronto’s Fabulous Manicure Bar. “Watch to see if they clean them thoroughly between clients, and check out the overall cleanliness of the salon before you take a seat. Look for clean towels, bathrooms and floors.”

2. Polishing Up
What’s hot for wedding day toes? We love French pedicures because they are clean and sexy, but if you want something a little more modern, stick to soft pink and sheer tones. “If you have a nice tan, go with creamy ivory on your toes; but if you have a fair complexion, stick with soft blush colours,” advises Beate Bongers of Banff’s Mountain Spa. Bongers loves OPI’s Bridal Collection that features a host of soft, romantic shades. “Though I do come across the odd person who wants dark red for their toes, our number one bridal shade is OPI’s Sweetheart.”

3. At Home How-to
If you love the ritual of pampering your feet at home, there are a few essentials steps to follow for the perfect pedicure. Start with a long soak to soften the nails and cuticles. Then assess what you’re dealing with before you dive in. “A lot of people do what I call ‘bathroom surgery’ and they cut or hurt themselves,” Eisen explains. “The key is to go easy on nails and cuticles because they’re delicate!” Trim and file nails into a soft square shape to avoid ingrown nails down the road; and never cut cuticles—always push back gently after treating them with a cuticle softener. Follow up grooming by massaging legs and feet with a smoothing moisturizer—then you’re ready to polish.

4. Maintenance 101
With your toes in tip-top shape, keep your feet smooth and soft by exfoliating with a foot file every few days (easy to do in the shower). Though you should get a month’s wear out of your polish, you can ensure it stays longer by applying a topcoat once a week. Also, don’t forget to moisturize feet and legs daily to keep skin soft and supple.
