Get the Perfect Fit

Common alterations that will make your gown fit like a dream. By Rebecca Essegern

Chances are your dress won’t fit you perfectly when it arrives in the store. Don’t stress—a good seamstress will be able to make it fit you comfortably and look gorgeous. We’ve compiled a list of common alterations to consider. Experts report that the average price of a wedding gown alteration is $350. Of course, this will fluctuate based on your style of dress and where you live.

Hem: Most wedding gowns are designed for a woman who is 5’9” and wearing heels. If your dress designer doesn’t offer a hollow-to-hem custom option or petite sizing, you’ll need to see a seamstress. This alteration can be simple or complex depending on the fabric and layers of your gown. Remember to wear your bridal shoes to your fitting.

Bust: If your dress is too loose in the bust, you can ask your seamstress to take the fabric in on the sides and back to make it fit. Another option is to have padded bra cups sewn into the bust area. This may also eliminate the need to wear a strapless bra.

Straps: A great percentage of bridal gowns are strapless. This look is flattering on many brides. However, if you’d prefer straps or cap sleeves, a skilled dressmaker will be able to create a pair to complement the gown. It is also a simple alteration to remove straps, as long as they don’t have a structural purpose on the dress.

Bustle: Many brides dream of a dress with a long train flowing down the back. This is a very romantic look—until it comes time to dance and party at the reception. Ask your seamstress which type of bustle will look best with your gown. American bustles are commonly called “over bustles,” while French bustles are referred to as “under bustles.” Ask your seamstress to colour-code the bustle ribbons so it is easy for your maid of honour or mom to help you bustle the dress in between the ceremony and reception.

Zipper/Corset: If you’ve lost a lot of weight since buying your gown, you may want to change the zipper on the back of your gown to a corset or lace-up back. This alteration is not simple and may be more costly as a result. On the plus side, corsets allow for a personalized fit.
