Game On

What’s the latest way for couples to have fun at home? By entertaining themselves with a sleek new gaming system. By Alison McGill

I know what you’re thinking. Video games???! Those are for guys! While yes, they have traditionally remained His domain for years; the trend is now changing thanks to super-cool, interactive gaming systems like the Nintendo Wii. Introduced last year, just before the holiday season, the Wii continues to be a bit of an enigma—you hear so much about it, but it’s so white-hot that, even a year later, you still may be hard-pressed to find one in stores. That said, Wii production is picking up and Farjad Iravani, marketing manager for Nintendo of Canada Ltd reports you will be seeing more units hitting shelves, especially before the holiday season.

So what is it that makes the Wii so unique and "couple" friendly? This system is incredibly interactive and offers a range of games to suit you and him (Nintendo reports the Wii is currently the number one wedding gift couples are registered for at Amazon.com). With regards to the interactivity of the Wii, it is the remote that truly sets this system apart and makes it ultra-fun for two to play. Instead of a traditional point-and-shoot hand-held controller, the Wii remote is motion-activated. It looks like a sleek TV remote, but has a band designed to be slipped over your wrist, giving you an instant connection to the game. It really is like you are "in" the zone! This makes for a new generation of gamers who find time to connect and spend time together while having tons of fun!

I recently had the chance to check out the Wii at home (with my guy) and at a recent launch event hosted by Nintendo, and I’m hooked. The system is easy-to-use, big-time fun and before you know it, a couple of hours have whizzed by while you’re playing away. Some of the new programs coming out for Wii this fall are amazing and offer something for everyone. Standouts include Super Mario Galaxy, the latest installment in the adventures of Nintendo’s most famous character, which has amazing 3-D effects and a mind-blowing sense of gravity; and Wii Fit, which comes with its own special Wii Balance Board that can measure users’ actions in fun aerobic toning and balance activities (the yoga program is super-cool!). My Word Coach is another cool offering that’s part-brain-teaser, part-spelling bee—I could seriously play this one all day.

If you want to take your game on the road, there’s also the Nintendo DS, a portable hand-held unit (it can also double as another controller for the Wii) with more than 140 titles currently available for play with. One of the unit’s most popular games Brain Age: Train Your Mind in Minutes a Day, is coming out with a second edition this fall to deliver more word and number puzzlers to test your smarts—think of it as an interactive crossword meets sudoku, that’s a whole lot of fun!
