The best part of the holiday season? All the wonderfully delicious baked treats that come with it. And this year is no exception. From gingerbread to bread pudding, take advantage of the sugar and spice that come with the season and serve up some holiday treats of your own. Curious what’s on the dessert menu this year? Bruno Feldeisen, executive pastry chef at Toronto’s Senses bakery gave us the inside scoop on which sweet treats are topping dessert lists this winter.
Traditional Goods
Make the most of your holiday soiree with old-fashioned goodies your guests know and love. “I believe Christmas is divided into three themes: North American/English, German/Nordic and French,” explains Feldeisen. For North American fare, Feldeisen recommends everything from gingerbread and eggnog to mincemeat pies and bread pudding. For German-inspired dishes try stollens (rich bread containing raisins, citron and nuts) with eggnog for a party hit. For some French flair, serve Buche de Noel (those delicious log cakes), marrons glaces (chestnuts candied in sugar syrup and glaze) and kugelhoff (an apple-based cake).
Trendy Treats
Looking to serve something a little more au courant? Feldeisen says the trend for holiday treats puts a refined twist on tradition. Create something a little more decadent than what your guests are used to – think gourmet mincemeat pies and festive libations like gingerbread martinis.
Sweet and Simple
You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to offer your guests festive fares. There’s still tons of ways to incorporate a winter theme into your food—even if you’ve already hired a caterer. Send your guests on their merry way with miniature gingerbread cookies as favours or—better yet—echo your festive theme with a pumpkin-flavoured pound cake. If you’re feeling adventurous, Feldeisen recommends introducing your guests to unique drinks like candycane lattes.
