If you’re looking to embrace your eco-spirit on your wedding day, a planet-friendly look, from your dress to the flowers you carry, is a great way to go. And don’t think just because you want to go green, you have to give up style. “Doing your part for Mother Earth doesn’t mean you have to forgo chicness,” says Jaye Marsh Graham, Toronto-based event director of It’s Personal! Occasions (itspersonal.ca) and producer of Canada’s Eco Wedding & Lifestyle Show. “All you have to do is incorporate the eco-resources around you into your look.” Here are five ways to work green elements into your aisle style.
The Dress
Why not recycle? Wear your mother’s wedding dress or the dress of another woman of significance in your life. “Have it re-crafted to fit your personality,” says Marsh Graham. “That way you can have sentiment and style.” If you don’t have a dress you can reuse, consider using a local designer to make your gown or shop for a confection made from sustainable fabrics such as organic silk or tencel.
The Jewellery
Take your wedding jewellery search to your own jewellery box and think about modernizing an old favourite. Are you crafty? If so, buy vintage beads and crystals and use your talents to make your own eco-accessories.
The Shoes
Do you have a pair of dyed pumps from your stint as MOH (maid of honour) at your best friend’s wedding? Look into re-dyeing them for your big day! Added bonus, they are already broken in so they will be comfy all-day long.
The Bag
Vintage bags are always in vogue, so start scouting for a chic clutch or an antique beaded number to go with your gown. Marsh Graham also suggests using the talents around you. If you have a handy friend or an auntie or grandmother who knits, why not get them to make you a custom creation in a luxurious bamboo fibre.
The Flowers
Round out your fabulous eco-ensemble with a bouquet of fair trade flowers. If you aren’t fussed about including one specific flower (like that rare rose from Africa), use what’s in season and choose locally grown blooms.
