Fall & Winter Wedding Themes

Pick a theme for your fall or winter wedding and let your personality shine. By Stephanie Piano

Summer has long been considered wedding season. The lovely weather, the great outdoors, and all the colour and foliage make a sumptuous backdrop for any celebration. But when planning your upcoming nuptials, don’t forget the cooler months. Canada’s spectacular fall and winter seasons are great inspiration for a beautiful wedding. From colour schemes to costumes, and seasonal locations to festive food, a fall- or winter-themed wedding can be as simple or extravagant as you’d like.

Here are five of our favourite themes for a wedding taking place in the cooler months.

Theme: Autumn Leaves
Colours: Burnt orange, cherry red, gold, wine, brown.
Location: A farm, country inn, or an apple orchard.
Decor: Woven baskets, real or fake leaves, apples.
Food: Apples, pears, squash, stew, fish, maple cookies and leaf shaped chocolates.
Why it’s fun: The crisp air, fresh colours and overall feeling of a new season make for a great atmosphere.

Theme: Winter Breeze
Colours: Snow white, ivory, silver, icy blue.
Location: Ski resort, chalet or a winter cottage.
Decor: Snowflakes, candles, twinkle lights, chandeliers, frosted windows, ice sculptures.
Food: Hot chocolate, warm soup, steak and potatoes, chocolate cake.
Why it’s fun: Even though the air is chilly outside, you can create a warm and beautiful wedding inside.

Theme: Thanksgiving Feast
Colours: Cranberry, gold, orange, red, copper, burgundy.
Location: A grand dining room equipped with a long wooden table.
Decor: Cornucopias, pumpkins, gourds, wheat sheaves and maize.
Food: Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato, corn, yam, pumpkin pie, festive treats.
Why it’s fun: Three reasons to be so thankful: 1. Your new husband; 2. Your wonderful family and friends; 3. All the delicious food.

Theme: Haunted Halloween
Colours: Black, orange, purple, green, red.
Location: An old mansion.
Decor: Pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns, black lace, black twinkle lights, glowing candles.
Food: Pumpkin pie, candy corn, candy apples, hot apple cider, popcorn, pumpkin bread, roasted pumpkin seeds, roasted sweet corn.
Why it’s fun: Guests have the option to dress up and dance to songs like The Monster Mash.

Theme: Happy Holiday
Colours: Poppy red, emerald green, white, ivory.
Location: Anywhere with a wood-burning fireplace and a great view of the outdoors.
Decor: Fake snow, poinsettias, holly, candles, evergreen trees, ornaments, icicle lights, tinsel, candy canes, wrapped gifts, snowmen, mistletoe, and sleighs.
Food: Ham, vegetable soup, chili, bread rolls, and hearty pasta.
Why it’s fun: What could be better than a new hubby for the holidays?
