Summer has long been considered wedding season. The lovely weather, the great outdoors, and all the colour and foliage make a sumptuous backdrop for any celebration. But when planning your upcoming nuptials, don’t forget the cooler months. Canada’s spectacular fall and winter seasons are great inspiration for a beautiful wedding. From colour schemes to costumes, and seasonal locations to festive food, a fall- or winter-themed wedding can be as simple or extravagant as you’d like.
Here are five of our favourite themes for a wedding taking place in the cooler months.
Theme: Autumn Leaves
Colours: Burnt orange, cherry red, gold, wine, brown.
Location: A farm, country inn, or an apple orchard.
Decor: Woven baskets, real or fake leaves, apples.
Food: Apples, pears, squash, stew, fish, maple cookies and leaf shaped chocolates.
Why it’s fun: The crisp air, fresh colours and overall feeling of a new season make for a great atmosphere.
Theme: Winter Breeze
Colours: Snow white, ivory, silver, icy blue.
Location: Ski resort, chalet or a winter cottage.
Decor: Snowflakes, candles, twinkle lights, chandeliers, frosted windows, ice sculptures.
Food: Hot chocolate, warm soup, steak and potatoes, chocolate cake.
Why it’s fun: Even though the air is chilly outside, you can create a warm and beautiful wedding inside.
Theme: Thanksgiving Feast
Colours: Cranberry, gold, orange, red, copper, burgundy.
Location: A grand dining room equipped with a long wooden table.
Decor: Cornucopias, pumpkins, gourds, wheat sheaves and maize.
Food: Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato, corn, yam, pumpkin pie, festive treats.

Theme: Haunted Halloween
Colours: Black, orange, purple, green, red.
Location: An old mansion.
Decor: Pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns, black lace, black twinkle lights, glowing candles.
Food: Pumpkin pie, candy corn, candy apples, hot apple cider, popcorn, pumpkin bread, roasted pumpkin seeds, roasted sweet corn.
Why it’s fun: Guests have the option to dress up and dance to songs like The Monster Mash.
Theme: Happy Holiday
Colours: Poppy red, emerald green, white, ivory.
Location: Anywhere with a wood-burning fireplace and a great view of the outdoors.
Decor: Fake snow, poinsettias, holly, candles, evergreen trees, ornaments, icicle lights, tinsel, candy canes, wrapped gifts, snowmen, mistletoe, and sleighs.
Food: Ham, vegetable soup, chili, bread rolls, and hearty pasta.
