Considered one of the most influential and visionary makeup artists in the fashion industry, Val Garland has worked with Hollywood beauties such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani and Kate Winslet, and collaborated with top international designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. Currently the artistic adviser for Yves Saint Laurent, Garland was recently in Toronto chatting about the hottest fall and winter beauty trends. Here are seven picks that are perfect for your big day.
- The pout. The focus was on the lips for fall, says Garland. If you want a standout pout, the perfect deep and dramatic shade for the fashion-forward bride is Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Volupté #22 in Exquisite Plum, $38. Garland recommends skipping the liner and topping your pout with gloss.
- Grey is the new black. Not just in bridal fashion (see “Grey Gardens” in the Fall/Winter 2009 issue of Weddingbells), but also in beauty. According to Garland grey is the shade of the season. “It’s universal,” she says of the colour, “It can be worn by almost everyone.” A fun alternative to black mascara is Yves Saint Laurent’s Luxurious Mascara in Sublime Grey, $36. Garland suggests layering it on lashes for a smoky look.
- Cream to powder blush. Unlike a powder, a cream blush will melt into the skin, perfectly defining the cheekbones. While it can be applied using the fingers, Garland suggests using a blush brush and dusting the colour on to gradually build to the intensity you desire.
- Sculpt. Yves Saint Laurent’s limited edition Palette Y, $78, is the perfect colour combo for highlighting and sculpting the face. To use, simply take a large brush and apply all over the face.
- Highlight with moisturizer. A favourite catwalk secret of Garland’s is simple, yet dramatic. After makeup is applied, Garland uses moisturizer on the cheekbones and forehead to create a dewy look.
- Go with gloss. “Lip gloss is back in a big way,” exclaims Garland. She recommends topping your lipstick with gloss at all times to secure pigment and lock in lip moisture. Gloss Volupté Sheer Sensual Gloss Stick SPF 9, $35, comes in four shades and tastes yummy, too! Chilled Raspberry is the perfect shade of soft pink for the girl who doesn’t like a lot of colour on her lips.
- Multi-tasking makeup. Take your bridal look from day to night by using gloss for the eyes, suggests Garland, who calls it a “film noir” look. Simply sweep Gloss Volupté over your eyeshadow and, voila, you’re ready to dance the night away!
