On your wedding day, less is always more when it comes to beauty. By Alison McGill

I’ll be honest. When I see photographs of brides with over-styled updos, heavy frosted makeup and too much bronzer (or worse, mega-tanned skin), I shudder. On your wedding day, your beauty look should be soft, pretty and romantic, never harsh. Whether you’re doing your hair and makeup yourself, or hiring a pro team to style you pretty, there’s a core list of dos and don’ts to keep on your bridal beauty radar. Here’s my top 10.

1. DO keep your hair natural looking. A simple chignon à la Amanda Seyfried at this year’s Oscars is a great option if you want upswept hair. I also love big waves and hair with lots of texture. Also, if you are normally a short-hair girl, keep it for your wedding—that’s your look!

2. DO have great skin. If skin care is not a priority for you, now is the time to make it one. On your wedding day, it’s all about your pretty face and a flawless, dewy complexion.

3. DON’T be heavy-handed with shadow and liner. If you love a smoky eye, make it wedding-day-friendly by using bronze or soft gray tones, not black.

4. DO wear false lashes. They look amazing in photographs and add a hit of drama, without being too over-the-top.

5. DON’T be afraid to wear colour. Jewel tones like amethyst, emerald and sapphire can look amazing on eyes if applied lightly to just give a pop of colour. I also love bold lips—rose, raspberry red and plum are great bridal options. Just be sure if you wear a bright lip to keep eyes neutral, and vice versa

6. DO wear a long-lasting lip colour. You don’t want to have to worry about it kissing off on everyone! There are some great formulations out there that stay the day, but do not dry out lips. My current favourites: Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain and M.A.C. Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolour.

7. DO go classic for your nail colour. Nude, pink, berry and soft coral are all perfect choices—steer clear of anything too dark or trendy.

8. DON’T tan. Bottom line, it’s bad for you and can leave your skin looking orange and leathery. If you want a golden glow, use bronzer, but go easy. A light dusting on your face, neck and décolleté is all you need.

9. DO have beauty trials to get your bridal look down. It can take a few tries to get it right and make sure your hair works with your makeup, works with you and works with your dress.

10. DO feel like a movie star. It’s your red-carpet moment, so rock it.
