Editor’s Note: January 2010

What wedding trends are hot for 2010? The Weddingbells editors share their favourites. By Alison McGill

For us at Weddingbells a new year means the kick off to a bright and shiny new wedding planning season. There are so many decisions to be made for your wedding, but don’t let that overwhelm you. Putting your party together should be one of the best experiences of your life! From picking the prettiest flowers to the sweetest treats, the most beautiful wedding dress and the perfect honeymoon spot, it’s all so much fun. To inspire you about some of these decisions my expert team and I have put together a hit list of our hot trends for 2010.

From Roseanne
“I love gorgeous wedding cakes, but this year watch for a switch up of sweets. Cupcake towers, macaroons, cookies, truffles, chocolates, donuts are all major cake alternatives. Another shift I think we’ll see more of this year is where couples have their receptions. More and more are choosing unique locations like art galleries, museums and cool restaurants for their parties.”

From Nicole
“When it comes to bridal fashion in 2010, one of the biggest trends will definitely be black and white. Vera Wang led the way with white wedding gowns adorned with black sashes and black evening dresses. And for grooms, nothing looks better than the classic black tux and white shirt combination. Another huge trend for the New Year: mix-and-match bridal parties. As opposed to identical dresses, every bridesmaid will wear a different dress in the same hue.”

From Stephanie
“Today with more couples living together before they get married, I think we’re going to see the increasing popularity of online wedding registries where you can include experiences—like your honeymoon—on your wish list. This unique registry will be in addition to creating a more traditional one for your home. And on the subject of honeymoons, I think this will be a year of exotic travel for many couples. Think an African safari and destinations in New Zealand or South America!”

As for me, some bridal essentials I’m loving for the year are glam, but not over-styled beauty looks (think Rachel McAdams on Vogue’s January issue—LOVE everything about it!); luxe European honeymoons (I’m just back from Tuscany and am convinced that’s the ultimate honeymoon destination); and cozy, intimate parties where only your very nearest and dearest are invited (if you want to cut wedding stress, this is definitely the way to fly).
