It’s hard to believe we’re on the verge of another new year, but also a new decade. Seriously, how is it that Y2K was 10 years ago? Time seems to move at an epically fast pace and here we are on the cusp of 2010, which means a slew of media wrap-ups on the year—and the decade—that was. I figure if you can’t beat them, join them—here’s my top 10 list of wedding bests from the past 10 years.
1. Personal Parties. Making your wedding personal has been the biggest wedding trend since I began my tenure at Weddingbells eight years ago, and it still tops the charts today. Every couple wants their celebration to have their personal style stamp on it, which means getting ultra-creative to plan the perfect party. We at Weddingbells have certainly seen our share of phenomenal weddings over the years, and I know in the years to come we will continue to see even more magnificent ones.
2. Destination Weddings. Taking your party on the road to an exotic location and having your nearest and dearest on hand to celebrate—how clever! More and more couples said “I do” to destination celebrations this decade and believe me when I say this trend has only just begun.
3. Cupcakes. In this decade, traditional tiered confections gave way to towers of teeny-tiny bite-sized cakes that everyone delights in eating. Still wildly popular, I would say cupcakes are definitely a wedding staple that’s here to stay.
4. Candid Wedding Photos. Thank goodness those stiff, over-posed wedding photos of yesteryear were finally sent packing in favour of more relaxed, captured-moment type photos.
5. Eco Weddings. As the world went green, so too did weddings. The rise of the eco movement over the past five years gave way to a whole new type of wedding celebration, one focused on reducing one’s carbon footprint and helping the planet.
6. Fashion Freedom. While strapless white princess dresses are still big sellers at bridal boutiques, this decade brides began breaking out of the traditional fashion mould, experimenting with different design styles (ie. asymmetric, empire, mini) and even colours (pale pink, blue, gold). Hallelujah!
7. The Busy Groom. This was the decade men finally became more involved in wedding planning. Typically most grooms are now present for everything from the venue selection to menu planning, choosing flowers and invitations, registering and honeymoon planning.
8. Registry Diversity. Unlike years past when fine china, crystal and linens were the only things on the registry bill, today you can register for anything and everything your heart desires. I love that you can now ask for anything from a lawnmower to a honeymoon at Disney World!
9. Relaxed Hair. Why did it take so long for wedding hair to become beautiful? This was the decade that saw brides starting to wear their hair “undone,” which means it’s elegant, touchable and, most-importantly, natural looking.
10. My Wedding. I tied the knot in February of this year, and I can honestly say it was the best wedding I’ve ever been to. I had my day, my way, and I would not have changed a single thing about it. My husband and I had a clear vision of what we wanted, and we stuck to it, which made for a perfect party. My advice to you is to do the same—I’d love to hear how Weddingbells helped you have “your day, your way.”
