Eat Right

Want to slim down for the big day? We have the skinny on five health plans that actually work. By Stephanie Gray

The moment you walk down that aisle, you want to look fit, fresh and fabulous. And with the big day rapidly approaching, your focus is to get in tip-top shape. First on your get-fit list? A complete fridge makeover. Throw out all that comfort food (translation: junk food!) and stock your fridge with healthy alternatives like fresh fruit, vegetables and organic yogourt. Next, say goodbye to yo-yo dieting and commit to a diet plan that really works for you. If you’re serious about getting in shape, here are five plans on the market today that can help you reach your goals.

The 5-Factor Diet
What it is: Originally created for celebrities, this system (designed by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak) revolves around the number five.
How it works: The plan includes five small meals a day that take only five minutes to make. Each meal must include five different criteria: low-fat protein, low to moderate glycemic index carbohydrate, fibre, healthy fat and a sugar-free beverage. Every Sunday is your "cheat" day, basically letting you eat whatever you want. In addition, Pasternak details five 25-minute workouts a week. Visit 5factordiet.com for celebrity testimonials.

Genuine Health's Weight Loss Program
What it is: Designed with help from Toronto-based fitness expert Bruce Krahn, weight-loss supplements are combined with a healthy diet and exercise plan to maximize results.
How it works: The program divides users in to three categories: active, dedicated or elite. From there you follow a meal and exercise plan that incorporates a variety of all-natural supplements designed to help you achieve faster results. Visit genuinehealth.com to get started.

The Eat Clean Diet
What it is: A healthy eating diet plan revolving around non-processed foods.
How it works: Developed by Tosca Reno, who personally battled with her weight until she found Eating Clean, is a plan that advocates eating non-processed foods. Unlike your typical "diet" Reno says losing fat is only one of the many benefits you'll gain from following her plan. Reno's simple concept provides an easy way to lose pounds. Visit eatcleandiet.com for more information on Eating Clean.

The Abs Diet for Women
What it is: A diet and exercise program designed to help you get in shape, which focuses on making lifestyle changes.
How it works: Unlike many diets, you can actually eat on this plan! Author David Zinczenko recommends eating five to six times a day and not counting calories or measuring portions. Instead, you fill up on the list of nutritious foods from Abs Diet Power 12. The program also includes one "cheat" meal a week, making it easier to stick to. Exercise-wise, Zinczenko suggests exercising for 20 minutes three days a week. Visit absdietforwomen.com for more details.

NutriSystem
What it is: A weight-loss program based on portion-controlled meals that fall low on the Glycemic Index.
How it works: You choose from 120 pre-packaged meals, which are delivered to your doorstep. A typical day consists of three meals, plus a morning and afternoon snack. It’s your job to incorporate your own grocery items (like fruit, vegetables, salads and dairy items) to your set entrees. Your food intake is comprised of 55 percent low-glycemic carbs, 25 percent protein and 20 percent fat for a 1,200 calorie a day meal. Visit nutrisystem.ca for more information.
