Desert Hideaway

A boutique hotel in Chile offers a unique and harmonious hideaway for honeymooners. By Jami Moran

If your idea of the perfect honeymoon is escaping to a luxe hideaway nestled within a spectacular landscape and indulging on delectable cuisine, then a reservation at Chile’s Awasi hotel is on the menu. This unique hotel, which opened in November 2006, aims to provide memorable travel experiences based on the three cornerstones of hospitality:  lodging, cuisine and adventure.

The Lodging
The term Awasi is derived from the word Wasi or huasi, meaning home or house in the ancient language Aymara. The Awasi hotel was constructed with the intimacy and comfort of its guests in mind, while still respecting the culture and architecture of its desert surroundings. Located in San Pedro de Atacama, a desert oasis town that has witnessed the harshness of time and the passing of ancient cultures, the hotel features just eight cozy cottages, all of them built out of stone, adobe and wood. Each harmonious space has been designed for relaxation and rest. Thatched roofs, wooden floors, fine linens and alpaca blankets are just the beginning. Ample bathrooms open up to private solariums with outdoor showers. During the day, the shade of thatch roofs lets in a warm morning light for a quiet day of reading. At night, tenuous lanterns praise the beauty of the Atacama skies – perfect for a nice bath with Atacama salts or a nightcap around your private hearth.

The Cuisine
In order to ensure the privacy and intimacy of their guests, Awasi’s restaurant is exclusive to hotel guests only. The culinary team, lead by head Chef Juan Pablo Mardones and Pastry Chef Maureen Jones, never cooks for more than 16 guests at a time and has designed a delectable menu that will expose you to new aromas and flavours. Each dish is created using only local ingredients (such as purple potatoes, patasca, quinoa and chañar). Every meal is served with only the finest wines and spirits.

The Adventure
The Atacama Desert, the driest desert on earth, is an adventure in itself. With an endless number of volcanoes, dry salt lakes, ponds and waters emerging in the midst of the desert, you’ll witness Mother Nature in her most powerful expression. Exploring the Atacama will allow you to truly experience the unique facets of this incredible desert, its geography, its history and hamlets that bear millennial tradition and culture. Excursions and outings can be individually tailored for each guest. Jeep tours and professional guides are always available for private tours so you can explore the landscape at your own pace.
