You've decided custom-made is the way for you. Here are five points to consider before signing on the dotted line.
- Know what you want. If you haven't tried on different styles, get out there. Most dressmakers will advise you to try on as many styles as possible before a consultation so you have a clear idea of what you want, like and most importantly, what you don't like.
- Be prepared to wait. When it comes to custom design work, patience is a virtue. Unlike buying a dress in a bridal boutique, you will not see a tangible version your gown until the design process is underway. This is part of the fun!
- Chill out. If you think you will feel stressed by the experience, don't do it. Once the process is well underway, some brides become nervous the dress will not turn out as anticipated or will not be done on time. If this sounds like it could be you, stick to purchasing a ready-made model.
- Shop around. Do research to find a designer you really like. It's important to feel confident about your designer and at ease communicating with them. Remember, he/she can't read your mind, and if you don't like something, you should feel comfortable enough to tell them! After all, it is YOUR dress.
- Be conscious of costs. If you have a budget allotted for your dress, be up front with the designer about your maximum price. Most professionals can work within your budget to deliver your ultimate dream dress.
