Crucial Carry-ons

Our list of on-board essentials you'll need for getting on a jet plane. By Alyssa Buckley

When you were younger, your carry-on bag probably consisted of your Walkman, some colouring books and one or two chocolate pudding cups. If only life was still so simple! Now that you’re all grown up (and there are major restrictions on what you can carry on board) there’s a lot more to consider before packing. We’ve put together a list of the essentials for your carry-on so you and your new mister can breeze through airport security.

  1. Entertainment. Whether you're flying for three hours or eight, you and your mister are going to need some toys to pass the time. Think MP3s, reading material and your favourite Nintendo games.
  1. Extra clothes. It’s unfortunate but it’s true: there’s always a chance your luggage may go MIA. Don’t panic. Pack a change of clean clothes and your swimsuit in your bag so you don’t have to worry about living in your travel clothes.
  1. Liquids. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority says you’re allowed to carry on liquids, gels and aerosols that do not exceed 100 ml (see below also). Since many so many fab brands like Aveda and Kiehl’s now carry your favourite products in convenient travel sizes, looking gorgeous on your trip has never been easier!
  1. Ziploc bags. All of your lotions, liquids, gels and aerosols need to be stored in one clear resalable bag no bigger than one litre in size. If you don’t have your own, many airports will provide them for you.
  1. Valuables. Because of bag checks and lost luggage make sure that any and all valuables you plan on bringing are stored in your carry-on. This includes your passport, cash, travellers’ cheques, jewellery, camera and any other items you don’t want lost or stolen.

For more information on limits and what you can pack, visit voyage.gc.ca. If you’re planning to travel outside Canada, make sure to check the airport regulations of the place where you are going, as many countries have different policies.

Might want to include wedding attire on that list! Never mind extra clothes- those can be purchased in a bind, but your wedding dress, shoes, and all other wedding accessories cannot!

Any suggestions on the best way to pack your carry on wedding dress? Do garment bags fit in those overhead compartments? I dont want my dress to get wrecked because somebody else shoves their suitcase on top of the garment bag.
