After the engagement and all the celebratory congratulations from your family and friends, the next step (after finalizing an estimated budget) is to string together a concept board filled with inspiring images. With so many ideas out there, it can be overwhelming—how do you know what’s right for you? Well, sifting through photos online and in print is one way to kick-start your wedding planning. Plus, having an inspiration board gives you and all your potential vendors a collective visualization of your wedding, so you can make sure you’re all on the same page. To aid you in creating a fun and inspiring board, here are a few tips:
1. Materials: If you’re a Photoshop pro, saving images on a computer and putting together a collage to print out should be easy peasy for you. Otherwise, be sure to have scissors, glue/tape and either a scrapbook or regular paper to mount your photos on.
2. Magazines are essential. Aside from Weddingbells, flip through your other favourite fashion or home decor mags and cut out colours, dresses or even rooms that you personally love. After all, your wedding day should be a reflection of things/ideas that you adore. Leave it up to the vendors to take those images and translate them into wedding-worthy items.
3. Sift through our online galleries, blogs, Flickr, etc. and print off images that you’re drawn to.
4. After you’ve gathered all your pictures, start sifting through them and categorizing them. After a while, you’ll probably see a pattern of various items that could relate to each other—organize these items accordingly.
5. Once you’ve got them in groups, pick the ones that stand out most. Aim for 10 to 15 to get a better understanding of how you picture your day. At this time, you may notice that you like contrasting images such as a long dress and a short dress—that’s completely normal. Keep both images and paste them into your album. More often than not, you’ll find that plenty of vendors can work with a combination of styles and themes.
Once you’ve compiled your collage, bring it with you as you hunt for your dress, flowers, cake and all the other details. That way when you step into a store, you’re not completely overwhelmed by everything you see. At least, with an inspiration board in hand, you’ll have a general direction to follow. Happy planning!
