While white will always be the colour du jour when it comes to wedding gowns, some modern brides are passing on the all-blanche ensemble and opting for a pop of colour when they walk down the aisle. Luckily, designers are saying wedding day colour is no longer limited to flowers and décor. In fact, a splash (or more!) of the perfect hue could be just the look to explore when searching for the dress.
Start Gradually
If walking down the aisle in a head-to-toe hue is a little much for you, consider incorporating a coloured ribbon on your empire waist, or have crinoline peeking out from under your gown. Designer Lana Lowon of Toronto’s Lowon Pope says earthy browns and greens are the hot colours of the season, although a hint of “something blue” is the most requested colour integration.
Full-on Colour
Lowon says her biggest request is for colourful dresses in rich shades of chocolate brown, grassy green, chartreuse and even hot pink. “One bride was not willing to spend a lot on an ivory dress that she’d only wear once,” Lowon explains. Instead, the bride opted for turquoise inserts on an asymmetrical line with crystal details, achieving a stunning water-like effect.
Subtle Shade
Are you a traditional gal through and through? Testing different shades of white against your skin is a simple way to impact your look. “Choose an interesting shade of white to make your gown individual, and then look for detail,” says designer Nicole Miller, who adds that her favourite look is an antiqued ivory with rhinestone appliqués. “To me, it is about making the bridal gown more modern and interesting with colour and detail.”
Underneath It All
When it comes to your wedding day lingerie, don’t be afraid to experiment with colour. Christine McLaren of Vancouver’s Christine Designs recommends a little lace chemise with a pink or blue bow for a soft and feminine appeal. “For the honeymoon or wedding night, we’re seeing brides branching away from the totally white look and including splashes of colour,” she adds.

"...white will always be the colour du jour when it comes to wedding gowns..."
To use the word 'always' in this context is misleading - white has been "the" wedding dress colour only for the past 160 years or so, beginning with Queen Victoria. Not only do I never wear white 'in real life', it does not suit me at all, and it gets dirty as soon as you look at it. Plus, with a typical "white wedding dress" you'll never wear it again - where's the practicality in that?? My wedding dress will not have one speck of white/cream/ivory or any other light colour in it (I'm leaning towards royal blue or maybe turquoise) - I think it will be fancy/elegant and while I won't wear it on a regular basis, I will definitely wear it again!

I too find it so funny that everyone talks about white wedding dresses being traditional, as well as diamond engagment rings. Both are relatively new historically. If one wanted to be really traditional- she would get married probably in black, grey or brown (best dress) and be wearing a plain band, pearl, garnet etc. ring. I'm sick of white wedding gowns and wish there were more options when it comes to full colour dresses--- most of which are more flattering, slimming and practical than white. On that note, diamond rings are astronomically expensive and other alternatives are prettier and more budget friendly.
