Classic Calligraphy

Pen your invitations with classic hand-written calligraphy. By Lydia Parafianowicz

There’s something deeply personal about handwriting, and calligraphy has a classic appeal that is both romantic and timeless. Weddingbells caught up with calligraphy artists who explained passionate loops, curls and swirls that embody the elegance of a felt-tip pen.

Calgary-based calligrapher Renate Worthington says it’s the uniqueness of handwriting that captivates her every time she reads a letter. “Computer generated fonts are accessible to everybody, but something hand-done is always more personal,” Worthington says.

Worthington custom-creates personal fonts and shades of ink. Unique jobs have included penning place settings in metallic ink on rocks or birch bark chunks.

Another reason Worthington advocates choosing calligraphy? Humans can actually proofread better than computers! “I will always catch a wrong address or a misspelled street on an envelope,” she says.

If you are on a budget and feel a professional calligrapher is too great an investment, Worthington encourages brides to give the writing art a try. “Your own personal hand is just as compelling to your guests,” she says. “You shouldn’t underestimate the emotional strength that your own handwriting has.”

Renee Browne is a Toronto-based calligrapher with over 46 years of experience in the writing field. Clients have included Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Prime Minister Trudeau; and she even scribed Canada’s congratulatory card to Prince William when he was born. Her advice if you are looking to hire a calligrapher is to book far in advance! Two to three months is optimum in her opinion because quality and workmanship do take time!
