Choosing Your Veil

Long ones, short ones and cascading ones, too: we decode veils and help you choose the right style for you. By Sara Duck

Originally women wore veils on their wedding day to express modesty and show submissiveness to their new husband. In Victorian times, veils were considered a sign of purity, and were an item passed down through generations of women in one family. Today’s thoroughly modern bride wears a veil simply to create a distinctive wedding day look and to accessorize her gown. Consider these helpful tips when shopping for a veil.

  • Decide on a style. Think about whether you want to make a grand entrance with a cathedral veil, or want to take a modern twist with a short one. If you find you don’t seem to fancy any of the veils, take heart: just because you are a bride doesn’t mean you have to wear one. A simple tiara, diamond barrette or flowers in your hair may be more suitable for you.
  • Make sure the veil works with your dress. Check the veil from all angles. What may look stunning in the front could look frumpy and cluttered from the back, or cover up details of your dress (in this case, go for a super-sheer veil). There’s also the issue of length—if it’s too long for your gorgeous tulle skirt, a little shortening may be in order. Another important thing to consider, according to Patterson, is the colour of your veil—make sure it matches or complements your dress.
  • Consider veil details. Is it stacked with sparkles and ornamentation? Is there so much detailing on it that it will weigh you down? Will it overpower you, or your dress? One important point to keep in mind—heavy beading or sparkles on your veil don’t always photograph well—they can appear as black dots in photographs! Discuss veil options with your photographer, who will advise if you are headed for problems.
  • Don’t forget about your hair. Consider how you want to wear your hair on wedding day and how to incorporate your veil. Most hairstylists suggest building your style around the veil, so everything works together. Brainstorm different hair and veil alternatives with your stylist, then make an appointment with your pro and bring your veil along, so you can try out a few options. It’s a good idea to have your stylist create a look that allows you to easily remove your veil without ruining your hairstyle. Chances are when it’s time to boogie, you will want to get down on the dance floor without your veil.
