When Ugly Betty star Rebecca Romijn recently wed Jerry O’Connell, her beau of nearly three years, she was the picture of effortless beauty in a sleek spaghetti-strap gown by Ralph Lauren and jewels by Neil Lane. Needless to say, Romijn’s glamorous bridal ensemble got us thinking about our favourite moments in celebrity bridal fashion. After all, we often look to the stars for fashion inspiration, and it’s only fitting that their wedding style would inspire us for years to come. Keep reading for a rundown of our best-dressed Hollywood brides.
Picture-Perfect Princesses
Every little girl is thrilled by the idea of a fairy-tale wedding, and this makes the idea of a real-life royal ceremony all the more appealing. It is with this in mind that we remember the outstanding bridal style of the these three trendsetters.
For her 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, starlet Grace Kelly wore a classic ivory gown. The bodice was constructed using century-old antique lace from Brussels, and the skirt consisted of yards of peau de soie and silk taffeta. To this day, Kelly is still the epitome of a stylish princess bride.
Of course, no discussion of royal weddings would be complete without mentioning the 1981 nuptials of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Diana set the bar for over-the-top gowns with enormous trains and cathedral veils. Indeed, her full-skirted dress was made from 40 yards of silk taffeta and 100 yards of crinoline!
Since the Kennedys have always been considered the royal family of the United States, it is only fitting that Carolyn Bessette is included in this category. When Bessette wed John F. Kennedy, Jr. in 1996, her sleek, bias-cut gown got tongues wagging and women running to their dressmakers demanding replicas of the Narciso Rodriguez creation.
Stylish Songbirds
Like their silver-screen counterparts, these two fashionable songstresses were shoo-ins for our best-dressed brides list—their rockin’ wedding style and bold use of colour is truly inspiring.
It was a musical match made-in-heaven when Gwen Stefani married Gavin Rossdale in 2002. Stefani looked stunning in a pink-and-white confection by none other than John Galliano for Dior, complemented by an antique-lace veil.
While Stefani opted to incorporate the colour pink into her wedding gown, hip-hop superstar Kelis decided to go green for her nuptials to Nas. Her verdant silk-chiffon gown, created especially for the occasion by designer Matthew Williamson, also featured a corset bodice and sweetheart neckline.
Daring Darlings
Though their weddings took place decades ago, these two ladies (an actress and a model respectively) still impress us on account of their modern, non-traditional bridal attire.
For her wedding to Frank Sinatra in 1966, Mia Farrow sported an adorable outfit that could easily translate for a modern-day wedding. Her white suit (a straight shift with a jacket) perfectly complemented a totally au courant pixie cut.
Likewise, Bianca Perez donned a sexy suit for her 1971 wedding to rock and roll legend Mick Jagger. For the ceremony in Saint-Tropez, Perez stepped out in a white tuxedo by Yves Saint Laurent accessorized with an elegant, veiled wide-brim hat—the perfect bridal look for a civil ceremony or beachside getaway.
