Do A Reality Check
Even if you have the perfect skin and never wear any makeup, your wedding day is the one day you simply must. At the bare minimum, you should wear foundation and concealer, because your skin should look as perfect as possible before you add any colour. It’s only for one day, so be a diva and go for it!
Practise Proper Skin Prep
Have a facial one month in advance, never a few days before. Your skin may have a reaction, or the aesthetician might squeeze something that leaves a mark. But be sure to get an exfoliation because it gives a glow and pretty texture to the skin, and helps makeup last.
Go Shine-Free
Oil-free foundation is a good idea because if you perspire, the product is just going to migrate. Also, if you are prone to oiliness, don’t asphyxiate your skin with too much product—your skin will just reject it and your natural oils will start to surface through your base. To keep oil under control, invest in a primer for under your foundation. Primers lock in moisture and keep your face in place ’til the last dance, so be prepared to boogie!
Powder for Perfection
Choose a foundation that has a matte finish—not deadly matte, but a bit powdery. Otherwise, light will bring out shine on your face and show up in photographs. Use a thin texture, apply with a sponge and always set with powder. Don’t hesitate to go back and re-powder yourself in the ladies’ throughout the night. Your forehead is one area to vigilantly monitor! Everybody in your wedding party should do the same.
Go With the Glow
If you want to look dewy and shimmery, apply an illuminator just at the top of your cheekbone. You can also play with shine on the eyes, but you want to avoid it everywhere else.
Select Shades Wisely
Choose muted colours for your lips and cheeks, like a tawny pink instead of a fuchsia. Your entire look should be soft, transparent and fairy-like. Anything too dark or bright is going to jump out and scream against a white dress.
Create Perfect Peepers
Eyes should never be too dark, so avoid a really smoky look. However, if you really love that look, skip black kohl pencil in favour of soft, grey-mauve shadows. Another trick for defining the eyes is to use a dark pencil and line inside and just above the lash line. It will look like you have darker, thicker lashes.
Get Lips that Last
Prep lips with a pencil as the base. Lipstick stays on longer because it’s drier, but then use a gloss on top. This combination won’t have the drying effect of those silicone, long-lasting lipsticks.
