Whatever your wedding-day budget, here are 10 ways to say “I do” to the perfect do without going broke in the process. By Viviane Kertesz
1. Get with the Plan. First things first: set a budget to avoid owing your first-born to your credit card company! (For some help, see our Budget Tool.)
2. Prioritize Your Funds. Decide whether you want an unforgettable party or a more luxurious honeymoon. If you’re cash-strapped but view a great cake as non-negotiable, eliminate the late-night sweets table to have your cake (served as dessert) and eat it, too.
3. Do the Math. To get your total W-day allowance, add your current savings, plus any money your parents contribute, to the amount of cash you can each put away ’til then.
4. Extra, Extra! Tipping and applicable taxes, especially for your catering and transportation, can add up quickly. Be sure to inquire about, and account for, these hidden costs.
5. Hire Help. What’s the easiest and number one way to not overspend? Hire a wedding planner. It’s their job to give you exactly what you want within your allocated budget.
6. DIY. Make your own favours with a gaggle of girlfriends; stuff organza bags or satin-lined boxes with token trinkets, homemade truffles or your favourite candy.
7. Drinks on the House. Save on expensive liquor mark-ups if your reception hall will let you run your own bar (you’ll need a permit and perhaps a province-certified bartender). The best part? Return unopened bottles for a full refund.
8. It’s a Date. Factors like season (winter), days of the week (Friday or Sunday), and even time of day (early morning) can greatly decrease W-day costs. Off-season dates can be key to securing that coveted reception venue you didn’t think you could afford.
9. Rent It. Really want it but can’t afford to buy it? Lease your heart’s desire at a fraction of the cost for expensive items like silk floral centrepieces or a champagne fountain.
10. Reuse It. Want fresh florals at your ceremony and reception? Don’t go without. Instead, get arrangements that do double duty. After the ceremony, hold your receiving line while your wedding planner transfers your ceremony’s blooming buds onto each reception table.
