Veil Alternatives for Your Style

Not the veil type of bride? Here are alternatives to suit your style. By Nicole Keen

On your wedding day, you’re luminous and glowing, so why hide your light underneath a veil? There’s a veil alternative for every bridal style, from elaborate updos to flowery or feathered decorations.

Sporty
Forgo traditional lace and tulle veils in favour of feathered fripperies that are more in tune with your athletic free spirit. Feathers are an unexpected alternative to flowers and even the simplest updos look fantastic when they’re festooned with luxurious white feathers. A feathered ornament is young and fun: the ultimate flight of fancy.

Classic
Hair itself whether real or faux is often the greatest accessory of all. Take your inspiration from Valentino’s Fall 2005 couture show where the models sported bow-shaped updos at the napes of their necks. Some bows were prim and proper while others were slightly messy and deliberately undone. This Valentino-inspired hairstyle is chic and classy, just like you. Plus, bows are very hot for spring. An experienced hairdresser can recreate the look using your own luscious locks interspersed with extensions.

Girly
There’s no denying you’re the belle of the ball when you parade down the aisle in a glorious, sparkly tiara. Whether you go big and bold or small and tasteful, a tiara can definitely capture the spotlight all on its own. Wear it high on the crown for a regal appearance, or tucked back in a bun for a more demure look. You don’t have to spend a fortune on your headpiece either—rhinestones and Swarovski crystals will sparkle like diamonds in sunshine or candlelight. Let’s face it you’ll never have a better opportunity to wear a crown, so find something shiny and ultra-girly and have yourself a royally good time!

Boho
For a decorative ’do that hearkens back to nature, adorn your hair with flowers. A single exquisite bloom has major impact when affixed to a simple chignon and random blossoms look glorious scattered amongst cascading, Pre-Raphaelite curls. Real flowers are fragrant and flawless, but artificial flowers have come a long way, too. For adornment that won’t droop or drop its precious petals, silk blossoms may be the better choice. Either way, you’re sure to stop traffic when you use a little flower power.
