Choosing the right tuxedo depends a lot on the formality of the wedding. Men in a formal, evening wedding mostly choose between black, white and grey, but can choose to have coloured tailcoats with matching accessories. During an afternoon wedding, there is more flexibility in tuxedos, such as the updated cutaway jacket with striped, pleated trousers. And designers are now creating vests and cummerbunds that co-ordinate with classic choices for bridesmaids’ dresses, though they cannot keep up with all the colour trends. For his wedding, Kevin Costner played with his accessories by pairing a white and grey polka-dotted tie with his dark grey cashmere suit by Ralph Lauren.
Groomsmen do not have to mimic the groom exactly, as Jerry would have us believe, either. The groom may have a different style to set him apart, like having a white vest to match his bride, while the groomsmen have vests to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. Marc Anthony followed suit with Jennifer Lopez by wearing an all-white suit with diamond cufflinks to match her diamond hair clips. Similar to the maid of honour, the best man can also have some signifying detail to set him apart from the rest. The father should also look different from the rest of the male bridal party. Traditionally, the ring bearer is the only one technically allowed to dress exactly like the groom.
Many stores are catching up with the changing trends and styles of today’s bridal fashion. The groom does not want to compete with the bride for style and attention, but looking dapper is always a concern on your wedding day. Selection, availability and cost are no longer obstacles for grooms, as Tip Top Tailors have just expanded their formalwear department to include Canada’s two premier names in tuxedo rentals, Syd Silver and Freeman Formalwear. They offer catalogues from both companies, plus sample tuxedos and accessories. With so much selection, grooms can find a growing number of options and styles to suit their unique personalities.
