Great hair, sparkling teeth and kissable lips are all necessary components of your final W-day look, but one beauty detail that you shouldn't overlook is your brows. Why? A pair of perfectly shaped arches will help define your face and open your eyes.
Benefit Cosmetics (benefitcosmetics.com) recently launched two Brow Bars in Canada, one at Holt Renfrew on Bloor St. in Toronto and one at Murale in Ottawa, with the plan to launch more across the country this year. With over 30 years of brow-shaping experience, it only made sense to get the scoop on stellar brows from them. Melanie Hutchinson, Benefit’s National Trainer, has definitely shaped her fair share of arches during her six years with the company. Here are her top tips:
1. They're Sisters, Not Twins
In other words, don't worry if your brows don't look identical. It's more about getting great definition than trying to make them match.
2. Go Through Rehab
Brow rehab, that is. If you're guilty of over-plucking, you will need about six months to get your brows back on a regrowth cycle. The key is to avoid touching them in between visits, even if it means locking up your tweezers!
3. Define
Your brows should be well defined like the rest of your W-day makeup, explains Hutchinson. Any sparse areas should be coloured in using a powder, and then set with a wax. She likes using the Benefit Brow Zings kit, $34, which includes a powder and wax, plus a mini brush and tweezers. If you're only going to commit to one product, this is it.
4. Highlight
By using a light eyeshadow or colour stick under the brow, you're basically giving yourself an eye lift, says Hutchinson. Benefit's High Brow, $24, is a creamy pink pencil that doesn't contain any shimmer and will act like a natural highlight. Use after you define your brows to instantly add a pop to your peepers.
5. Colour Wheel
So, how does one go about choosing the right shade? Benefit likes to keep it simple, offering three shades: light, medium and dark. Hutchinson recommends going two shades deeper than your natural colour—never, ever lighter.
6. Photo Ready
A bridal brow is a little more defined than your usual brow, Hutchinson explains. You'll need a strong brow to compete with your makeup and your brows are a key part in defining your face in photographs.
