Breakfast in Bed

Say "I love you" with a special morning meal. By Stephanie Gray

It is the most important meal of the day, so what better way to get his day started than with a hearty breakfast you created especially for him. This Valentine's Day happens to fall on a Saturday, making it the perfect time for this sweet gesture. I mean, who wants to make breakfast for anyone other than themselves on a workday? Also, unlike a gourmet dinner that can take time to create, a great breakfast can be as simple as fruit, yogourt, pastries and fresh coffee. The secret to your success is in the details. Here are five tips to achieving breakfast in bed success.

1. Surprise Him
Half of the fun in doing the whole breakfast in bed thing is the surprise. Make sure to sneak out of bed earlier than your mister. You don't want him finding you in the kitchen mid-prep!

2. Show the Love
Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter for pancakes or cut his toast into a heart. Add splashes of red with a bowl of berries or a side of jam. A handwritten note or card is another thoughtful addition.

3. Details, Details
It's not everyday one gets served in bed, so go out of your way to make it special. Whether that's getting some cute napkins, putting a rose on the tray, including salt and pepper shakers or serving condiments in ramekins, the details count!

4. Personalize
By now you know his favourite breakfast—whether it's a western omelette, croissants from your local bakery or freshly squeezed orange juice—so take the time to prepare the meal you know he'd want, but wouldn't normally ask you to make. Or if you're not much of a cook, there's nothing wrong with buying scrumptious favourites pre-made.

5. Be Tidy
Crumbs in the bed are not only messy—they can ruin the mood! Instead, consider using a breakfast tray (pictured) to hold the food. If that's not a possibility, use a tablecloth to create a picnic-like setting. A side table or chair can hold less-stable items like beverages. There's nothing like spilt coffee on your bed to turn a romantic breakfast into a cleanup party.
