No matter what kind of party you’re throwing, the most important element is food. When hosting an outdoor party, the key is to keep it simple but fun. Here are some ideas to revamp summer party food:
- Stick with old favourites. Serve your guests what they expect—hamburgers, sausages and kebabs—but offer something new, like blue cheese instead of cheddar. Offer simple sides, like grilled vegetables and salads (potato salad is a classic choice).
- Don’t serve foods that will be ruined if they are served warm instead of hot or chilled instead of cold.
- Spruce up your condiments by serving them in a hollowed-out bell pepper or in martini glasses.
- Use fruits and vegetables that are in season to give your food a burst of flavour. Add cucumber, tomatoes and peppers to your hamburgers and salads. Liven up dessert with cherries, strawberries and rhubarb.
- If you’re not using tables, serve finger foods or pre-cut, bite-sized food rather than food that needs to be cut with a knife.
- To help your guests stay cool and hydrated, offer iced drinks in addition to the alcohol you may be serving.
- Instead of dull paper plates, serve your guests their food on acrylic dinnerware. It looks exactly like glass, comes in a variety of colours and styles, and is shatter-resistant.
