Who knew there was so much a bride could create on her own? Here are four DIY ideas for creating a fabulous wedding day.
Complete Fabrication:
If you’re handy with a sewing machine, there are tons of things your can make for the wedding day. Even for less confident stitchers, simple projects like a flower girl bag or ring pillow are easy to accomplish. Douppioni silk or satin are luxurious choices, but poke around a fabric store and see what inspires you.
Flower-girl Purse
For a very simple purse, cut a rectangle that is twice the final size of the purse. Fold it in half with the good side facing inward, stitch the two sides together and turn the purse inside-out. Attach a ribbon for the handle and embellish with beads or silk flowers if you like and voila! You’ve got the perfect carryall for little adorable maids.
Ring Pillow
Take two squares of fabric and place them with the good sides facing in. Stitch around the edge, leaving a two-inch opening. Turn the pillow inside-out, stuff with craft batting and close the opening. To finish, affix a ribbon or satin cord so you can attach the rings. Depending on your skill level, there are lots of options for embellishing your pillow and a little lace or trim can go a long way?even for the most hopeless seamstress.
Silk Screening
Add a special touch to your sewing projects by incorporating silk screening. Starter kits are available at art supply stores and the technique is actually quite simple. Once mastered, there will be no end to your fabric powers. Screens can be re-used, so make one with your monogram and personalize everything from napkins to favour bags. To spruce up otherwise blah ballroom chairs, sew pretty little caplets and screen your favourite love quotes on the backs.

Contain Yourself:
Packaging is the key to great do-it-yourself favours. Stores like Essential Packaging offer a head-spinning number of options for a pretty wrap-up. There’s a solution for every favour so think about what you’d like to give and let the contents be your guide.
Boxes
Plain white favour boxes hold everything from scrumptious cookies to scented soaps and can be gussied up with paper and ribbon to suit your theme. Don’t forget to add an extra touch to make them yours. Attach a tag with a string of glass beads, top with a silk flower or have a personalized stamp created and emblazon your little beauties. The stamp can then be used on all your other paper pieces, such as programs, escort cards and napkins.
Tins
Colourful candies and flowery loose-leaf tea shouldn’t be hidden away in boxes - show them off! Clear-topped metal tins, also known as watchmaker cases, come in a range of sizes to suit whatever treats you have on offer. Embellish with a monogrammed sticker or tie them up in a bit of tulle. Better yet, write your guests’ names on strips of paper, wrap them around the tins and you’ve got place cards, too!
