When thinking about what to register for, don't forget about decorating the walls of your newlywed nest! It's a perfect time to start building your art collection with affordable art. Open Studio (openstudio.on.ca), which has been operating for over 40 years, is home to over 1,500 original prints by over 150 artists. What makes the gallery especially unique is it's not commercial, but operated by artists dedicated to the production and promotion of printmaking. The studio offers a wedding registry service, allowing you to choose your print with the help of a professional, then they'll create a specially-designed wedding registry announcement you can give to your friends and family. Plus, they'll deal with tracking the buyers and payment details. The studio is located in downtown Toronto, but those not in the area can find many of the artists’ work online to get a sense of their style, and then make the difficult decision of choosing just what piece you'd love to have in your home!

Open Studio has been a phenomonal source for wedding gifts for me. Who wouldn't love art as a gift and it is not usually something newleyweds buy for themselves. In some cases, I have brought friends to pick out their own print. It is a great beginning for an art collection!!! They also give gift certificates to make your life even easier!

I also often buy baby shower gifts at Open Studio - last year my partner and I started our god-daughter's art collection with a beautiful Cybèle Young print. I love that the works of art we give our friends and family from Open Studio become cherished heirlooms and - unlike many gifts - they never go out of fashion! Many appreciate in value over the years and in these economic times, there aren't many investments that can claim that!

We used Open Studios for our wedding registry in June of 2008 and could not have been more pleased with the service provided and the end product - three beautiful, framed prints for our home! Our guests loved that they were able to purchase a gift (or portion thereof) that we would cherish and display in our home for years to come - and the fact that they were supporting local artists.

I have shopped at Open Studio for special family gifts, and it is a joy.
My beautiful twin nieces have Original Canadian art as their first gifts from me, for their Christening. Emma Nishimura and Vicki Cowan made the beautiful pieces of art.
My teenage niece received one of Genvieve Joudouin's works of arts as a gift from me, and my niece loves it.
How perfect- female and Canadian artists work being part of these young girls' lives, and I get to be the happy gift giver.
The Open Studio gift registry is a great idea, and I plan to put that to work in the future, vs. selecting works for them myself.
And I think I want to register myself, and tell my friends and family....

We registered in the usual dept. stores. But for my bridal registry I went for non-conventional and registered some art at Open Studio, amongst other places. A little bit of art at the beginning of our married life.
