What flowers are you planning on walking down the aisle with? We posed that question on Facebook to you and the response was quite amazing. For plenty of you, roses were the ultimate petals, while others replied with tulips, hydrangeas, calla lilies, peonies, and—my personal favourite—orchids. As I ventured through the past pages of Weddingbells to compare then vs. now, I noticed that while roses were huge back in the ’80s and ’90s, other flowers flew under the radar. And, as for colour? Various tones of white and pastels were certainly popular.
But as the ’90s unfolded, I was happy to see that—gasp—brighter shades and other florals were being integrated into every decor element possible. Today, I’m pleased that a combination of both past and present floral trends is being used. There has definitely been a shift towards more personalized arrangements as opposed to “traditional” bouquets. I’ve seen former brides get creative by incorporating certain colours to show off their personas, i.e. yellow for cheerful, white for sophistication, etc. Another idea that’s been tossed around is intertwining a bouquet with family heirlooms to fulfill that “something old” or to emit a vintage vibe. Bottom line, brides are getting creative with their flowers. This year, and for the next 25, I’m confident that we’ll see more and more of you walking down the aisle with a bouquet that not only looks good but is a true reflection of your style and personality.
