The 411 on Destination Dresses

Five tips to consider before you purchase your destination wedding gown. By Brittany Johnson

You’ve decided you’re going to tie the knot in a far-off romantic place. You’ve picked your dream location, set a date and invited your nearest and dearest. And now, after all the hard work, you’re ready for some fun – dress shopping. But what kind of dress should you choose? What should you be thinking about when you’re ready to choose? Here are five fabulous tips to help you pick the perfect destination dress.

1. Know Your Mood. Whatever the atmosphere of the location you’ve chosen for your special day, let your dress follow suit. If you’re exchanging vows on a beach, the mood will be more relaxed as compared to a grand affair in a hotel ballroom. This doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your dream dress, though; only that it may need a few adjustments to blend seamlessly with your wedding day backdrop.

2. Beachy-keen. If your ideal wedding locale is soft sand, warm weather and crystal clear water, your dress should reflect that. Do you want your gown to lightly skim the sand beneath your feet, or should it be shorter, to show off your glam gams and tropical tan? You’ll also want to consider the fabric to be used. Heavy materials may cause you to sweat and essentially weigh you down, so stay away from them.

3. Winter wonderland. If frost and snow are setting the stage for your big day, you’ll want a dress that will steal the show. You may not be in the tropics, but this doesn’t mean you can’t bare your shoulders in a strapless number or a low-cut back. Shield yourself from the shivers with a shawl, wrap, or faux-fur shrug. Some designers provide matching capelets and shawls to go with the dresses they sell.

4. Transportation. For your destination wedding, transportation plays a big role – one that you might not have considered. How will your dress get to where you’re going? Depending on its size and the intricacy of the design, this can present a problem. If you’re flying, check with the airline to see if you can take your gown on board. If the dress is too big and requires a large box or careful handling, it might be safer to courier it to your destination ahead of time. Then as soon as you and yours arrive at the hotel, take your dress out to let it breathe so it can fall back into its natural shape.

5. Ask around. When it comes to one of the most memorable moments of your life, it never hurts to ask around. Talk to friends, family, and even travel agents—anyone you feel comfortable with who can help with things you might be forgetting. You’re likely to discover possible glitches that you probably never considered, or learn something completely new. Most people will be more than happy to share their stories and helpful hints with a bride-to-be.
